Common symptoms and what usually causes them

A laptop that is dead with no lights usually has a shorted MOSFET or capacitor, or a blown fuse, on the motherboard. Charging faults tend to come from the DC jack, a charging IC or the USB-C controller. If it powers on with no display, we look at the memory or GPU power rail, the BIOS and the GPU solder joints. Sudden shutdowns often trace back to the power-management chip or overheating, which we fix by replacing the part, cleaning and repasting.

Good to know before a board repair

Before a board repair, know that a reflow is only a short-term fix and reballing helps only when the chip itself still works. A few chips are supplied only to brand service, so if we can’t get one, we tell you and quote a board instead. Your drive doesn’t need to be wiped for a board repair, but copy your files first if the laptop still starts. After a spill, switch it off, unplug the charger and bring it in the same day.

Reflow is not a real fixHeating a board to reflow a chip can bring a laptop back for a while, but it rarely lasts. Don’t accept it as a permanent repair.
Reballing has limitsIt renews the solder under a chip. If the chip itself has failed, it has to be replaced.
Some parts aren’t soldA few chips are only supplied to brand service. If we can’t get one, we say so and quote a board instead.
Back up if it still startsBoard repair doesn’t need your drive wiped, but copy your files first if the laptop still turns on.
After a spill, act fastSwitch it off, unplug the charger, don’t use a hair dryer and don’t try to turn it on. Bring it in the same day if you can.
