Where your files can be reached from depends on the laptop. Most Windows laptops use an M.2 SSD that can be taken out and read on another machine, even when the laptop itself is dead. Many MacBooks and some thin laptops have the storage soldered to the motherboard. On those, the board has to be repaired at chip level so it can boot or be read, and that is the work our bench is set up for.
If an SSD or hard drive has failed on its own, we check whether it still shows up and can be read. A hard drive that clicks or grinds has a mechanical fault and needs a clean-room lab, so we tell you that straight away rather than open it and make it worse. Stop using a failing drive as soon as you notice, because every power-on can make recovery harder.

Can you recover data from a laptop that won’t turn on?
Often, yes. If the SSD is removable, we read it on another machine. If the storage is soldered to the board, we repair the board at chip level so the data can be read.
Can you recover data from a MacBook?
MacBooks from 2018 onwards mostly have the storage soldered to the logic board, so the board needs to work to reach the data. We repair MacBook logic boards at chip level on our MacBook logic board repair bench.
My laptop got water damage. Is my data gone?
Not always. Bring it in quickly and don’t charge it. We clean the board first, then try to reach the storage. See laptop water damage repair.
My hard drive is clicking. Can you fix it?
A clicking or grinding hard drive has a mechanical fault and needs a clean-room lab. We’ll tell you that up front and won’t open it on our bench.
What should I bring for the recovered files?
